RPTS 678: Latent Variable Model Applications in the Leisure Sciences
This course is intended to introduce students to structural equation modeling (SEM). Structural equation modeling (sometimes referred to as covariance structural analysis) is a regression‐based technique that incorporates elements of path analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The goal of the class is to provide students with a background on conceptual issues, an application of the method, and insight on programming through LISREL.
At the end of the course, students will have a solid, conceptual foundation of structural modeling issues, be able to analyze data using LISREL software, critically evaluate professional articles, and write‐up SEM results. THIS COURSE SHOULD SERVE AS A PLATFORM FOR FURTHER ENQUIRY.
RPTS 602: Social Science Foundations of Recreation, Park and Tourism Resource Agencies
The overall objective of this course is to explore social scientific approaches to the study of leisure. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to articulate several social science theories and concepts that have been applied to understand leisure behavior in multiple contexts (e.g., outdoor recreation, tourism) and among diverse populations (e.g., different racial and ethnic groups, different life stages, gender, and social worlds).
Consequently, throughout the course, there will be predominantly four cross-cutting themes;
Facilitation, constraint and negotiation processes;
Motivation to engage in leisure;
Globalization/internationalism of leisure lifestyles; and
Lifespan perspectives. Students will also be exposed to a diverse methodological approaches and tools.
